Microsoft PowerBI one of the best ‘drag-and-drop’ tools in the industry. You pick a field you want to analyze, drop it into the Power BI dashboard, and voila! Insights are right in front of you. The most basic version is free and can be downloaded here. But of course there’s more to PowerBI.

Power BI is a collection of software services, apps, and connectors that work together to turn your unrelated sources of data into coherent, visually immersive, and interactive insights. Your data may be an Excel spreadsheet, or a collection of cloud-based and on-premises hybrid data warehouses. Power BI lets you easily connect to your data sources, visualize and discover what’s important, and share that with anyone or everyone you want.

In the month of November 2020, I participated in a #30DaysofPowerBI challenge brought by Cities In Codes, a Data Fellowship program comprising of activities channeled to grooming data enthusiasts into data leaders to tackle the quintillion bytes of data needs for Africa. In this article, I’ll be sharing the weekly dashboards I created from scratch to show off my learning process. Happy Viewing!

WEEK 1 Project: Inc 5000 Companies

The Inc. 5000 is a list of the fastest-growing private companies in the US. Founded in 1979 and acquired in 2005 by Mansueto Ventures, this prestigious list has become the hallmark of entrepreneurial success.

The Dataset consisted of information about each company on the INC 5000 list in 2019. Fields include the company name, industry, founding year, website, and location, as well as 2019 revenue, % growth, number of workers (year-over-year), and the number of years on the list. The dataset uploaded by Maven analytics can be downloaded here.

In my analysis, the questions below were answered in order to draw insights from this data:

  • Broken down by industries, what’s the average revenue among companies on the list?
  • What companies have the top five(5) ranks?
  • What is the growth rate per state in the US?
  • Which industries saw the largest average growth rate?

WEEK 2: 120 Years of Olympic History

The first modern olympics was held in Athens, Greece in 1896. The ‘modern Olympics’ comprises all the Games from Athens 1896 to Rio 2016. Baron Pierre de Coubertin presented the idea in 1894.

There are two long periods without any Games between 1912–1920 and 1936–1948, corresponding to the World War I and World War II.

The most significant benefit of visual analytics is to ease the understanding of complex data, while representing it in correct, concise, and appropriate way. Below is the dashboard showing some of the key insights found while analyzing this dataset.

Some key insights from the dashboard above:

  • Participation of females increased over the years. We can see that in the seasonal analysis trend graph showing the percentage of females participation.
  • Athletics, Gymnastics, Swimming, Cycling and shooting are the top participated sports over the period.
  • USA, Germany and Russia are the top 3 countries with the most medals in various Olympics games.
